There are 230 scarecrows in downtown Buchanan as Buchanan Scarecrow Charities raises money for the community. President Clare Hagan tells our partners at WSBT-22 they work year-round on the designs.
“We do set a goal and you do so many a week in knowing that stuffer-people say they’ll stuff X number this week and the embellishers do so much,”
Vice president Betsy Kutemeier is an embellisher and adds she names every one she makes every year.
“I work back here, and I just start looking around at all the things I have and it just it comes to your mind somehow.”
Both say it will be hard to top this year’s scarecrows and have raised $9,000 so far. They have been donated a warehouse to store all of their supplies. The money raised in the past has been donated to Buchanan High School, the local art center, and Toys for Tots.
