 1889 Hanson Goodrich patented the modern stove-top coffee pot. It had a broad base for boiling, an up flow central tube and a perforated basket hanging on it. Goodrich’s design would transform any standard coffee pot into a stove-top percolator.

1961 East German Communists began building the Berlin Wall to prevent the flow of people seeking the freedoms of the West. The wall eventually surrounded all of surrounding East Germany and East Berlin until government officials tore it down in 1989.

1941 The world’s first plastic car was unveiled to the public by Ford. It was composed of a steel tubular frame with plastic panels made from a resin made of soy, hemp, wheat, and flax.  It ran on hemp fuel.

1942 Bambi opened at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

 

Music History:

1966 Lovin’ Spoonful started a three-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Summer In The City’, it made No.8 in the UK. The song features a series of car horns during the instrumental bridge, starting with a Volkswagen Beetle horn, and ends up with a jackhammer sound, in order to give the impression of the sounds of the summer in the city.
