1927 The Mount Rushmore memorial was dedicated. It was completed in 1941. The sculpture features U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. They were chosen to represent the nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation, respectively.

1966 The U.S. Treasury discontinued printing the $2 dollar bill due to lack of demand. It was reintroduced in 1976.
Music History:
1985 ‘Money for Nothing’ by the Dire Straits would hit #1 on the U.S. singles charts. Notable for its groundbreaking music video and a cameo appearance by Sting singing the song’s falsetto introduction and backing chorus, “I want my MTV, he also co-wrote the song with Mark Knopfler. The video was also the first to be aired on MTV in Europe when the network started on August 1st 1987.
