Berrien County is looking to purchase an Indiana Michigan Power property in Buchanan. Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Thursday, County Administrator Brian Dissette said the plan is to purchase the I&M building at 500 Circle Drive.

“This is the future home of upgraded EOC [ Emergency Operations Center ] and 911,” Dissette said. “A secondary benefit, we hope to build a conference room so that should the board want to have more of a presence in south county, you can have that.”

The sale price is $200,000. Dissette said the building can also serve as an emergency operations center for the county and I&M in case anything ever goes wrong at the Cook nuclear power plant. Additionally, there are talks about leasing a floor of it to the city of Buchanan for city business. Dissette said the first step once the property is purchased will be to build a tower for 800 megahertz radio traffic at dispatch. The sale could be coming soon to the county board.
