1946 Legendary singer Dean Martin recorded his first songs. Shortly after, he would team up with Jerry Lewis to form the famous comedy duo Martin and Lewis.

1955 The phrase “In God We Trust” became required by law to appear on all U.S. currency. It had first appeared on coins in 1864. In 1956 it became the official motto of the U.S.

1979 The 82-ton U.S. space station, “Skylab” launched in 1973, crashed to earth. About 22 tons of it were expected to survive reentry prompting much public concern. However, it landed safely over the Indian Ocean and Australia. Australia fined NASA $400 for littering.

 

Music History:

1973 Billy Preston started a two-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with ‘Will It Go Round In Circles’, his first of two US chart toppers. His other? “Nothing from Nothing.”
