Governor Gretchen Whitmer has announced another $6 million investment in the state’s Michigan Reconnect and Futures for Frontliners programs to help adults without a college degree earn one at a community college. She said Wednesday in addition to trouble paying tuition, many prospective college students in the state face obstacles like transportation, the cost books, childcare, and high speed internet access.

“Today I’m excited to announce a new effort in partnership with Michigan community colleges and tribal colleges to help alleviate those impediments,” Whitmer said.

Reconnect Michigan and Futures for Frontliners pay for tuition, and the $6 million announced this week will come in the form of $550 to pay those other expenses. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity is working with community colleges and tribal colleges to have grant agreements in place by the end of July. To be eligible for the grants, students must be Michigan Reconnect or Futures for Frontliners scholarship recipients, have completed at least one semester with the program, or be enrolled in or enrolling for at least a semester.
