Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency for Mecosta County after severe weather and flooding last month. Whitmer says this state of emergency declaration will ensure that Michiganders in Big Rapids receive the resources and support they need to recover and rebuild following severe weather and flooding. Big Rapids City Manager Mark Gifford says they’re appreciative.

“We needed this and need it desperately,” Gifford said. “On May 11, we had a storm pop up, over four inches of rain in less than two hours and it just overwhelmed our city systems and washed out roads, damaged parks, damaged bridges.”

Gifford says they should receive $250,000. However, the repair to the washed out road could reach $2.5 million.
