The U.S. House on Wednesday approved gun reform legislation that would raise the age to buy some assault rifles to 21, and among the five Republican representatives to vote for it was Congressman Fred Upton. The protecting Our Kids Act would raise the age to buy certain semi automatic rifles to 21, create new offenses for selling large capacity magazines and gun trafficking, and create a buyback program for such magazines. The Hill reports Upton was among five Republicans to vote for the plan, a day after Upton told WSJM News he would likely support banning assault rifle sales to those under 21. Republicans voting for the package with Upton were Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Chris Jacobs of New York, and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania. The package passed the House, 223 to 204, with two Democrats opposing. It is not expected to pass the Senate. Upton told us the Senate has taken the lead on gun reform. The House bill will likely die there.
