With 1,200 volunteers needed to run the Kitchenaid Senior PGA Championship each year, it’s only natural the PGA would honor them each year with awards. The Volunteer of the Year Award is named for Dr. John M. Proos III, the father of former state Senator John Proos. Proos III died in 2014, but his son told told us he’s honored to have the Volunteer of the Year Award named for his dad. John Proos said Friday his father was the volunteer medical director for the event its first few years in Benton Harbor. He helped coordinate the doctors and nurses and medics on site for whatever injuries people might happen to sustain. Proos said it’s something that just can happen, whether it’s a bee string or a broken bone. Proos himself has volunteered at the Kitchenaid Senior PGA Championship since 2011. He says his father “believed in this tournament,” as a showcase of the community. It takes all kinds of volunteers to run the PGA event. It continues through Sunday.
