Democrats in Lansing have tried to advance a bill that would impose penalties on gun owners who don’t safely store their weapons. Under the bill in a package of gun safety laws that would order universal background checks, gun owners who allow minors access to a gun that is used to harm others would be charged with a felony. State Senator Jeremy Moss urged his colleagues to act following the Texas school shooting:

“We cannot have one more child in this state and in this country wondering if it is their last day in this state and in this country as they go to school,” Moss said in the Senate. “This is ridiculous. Let’s get moving.”

However, Republicans like Ken Horn said it is too early to assign bill numbers to grief. The bill advanced to the Senate and then was quickly ordered back to a committee.
