1502 Explorer Christopher Columbus set sail on his fourth voyage to the “New World.” He was searching for a westward passage to the Indian Ocean mainland.
1659 The celebration of the Christmas holiday was made illegal in Massachusetts. The Puritans associated such celebrations with paganism and idolatry. Violators were fined. This remained in effect until 1681.
1928 The first regularly scheduled Television shows on General Electric station WGY, Schenectady, New York. Programs were broadcast Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. They were dramas.

1970 The triple soundtrack album Woodstock was released in the US, going gold within two weeks. The album featured tracks by; Canned Heat, Richie Havens, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Santana and Sly & The Family Stone.
