State Representative Mary Whiteford of Casco Township is praising House passage of three bills to establish a framework for the distribution of $800 million Michigan is receiving through the opioid settlement. She authored two of the bipartisan measures.

“I think it’s really important that we’re looking forward to make sure the people of our state have the tools to help them through this illness, but also to prevent it,” says Whiteford.

She says the state is receiving quite a bit of money.

“Our state is receiving $800 million over 20 years, half of that goes directly to local municipalities.”

Some critics are upset the bills don’t address rural governments.
