Michigan State Police are looking for witnesses to a crash on Friday that injured one of the agency’s troopers in Van Buren County. Lieutenant DuWayne Robinson with the Fifth District tells WSJM News the trooper was sitting along the side of the road after responding to another crash on eastbound I-94 near mile marker 51 just before 8 a.m.

“While sitting there in stationary patrol, he was struck by a semi, which totaled the vehicle and caused entrapment for the trooper,” Robinson said.

The trooper had to be freed by firefighters. He was taken to a hospital in Kalamazoo and stayed overnight. He’s now back home. Robinson says state police are asking anyone with information on the crash to step forward.

“We’re just trying to find out the names and get a statement from the eyewitnesses, other motorists, who may have witnesses the crash while driving through the area that day.”

Robinson says some people stopped at the scene to help the trooper. The driver of the semi was arrested and charged with failing to move over for an emergency vehicle and reckless driving. Witnesses to the crash are asked to call the Michigan State Police Paw Paw post.
