A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of Planned Parenthood of Michigan asking for immediate court action to protect access to abortion in the state. ACLU of Michigan filed the suit on Thursday. Deputy Legal Director Bonsitu Kitaba outlines the details of the litigation.

“We filed a preliminary injunction asking the court to enjoin enforcement of the law,” says Kitaba, adding it will prevent “the attorney general or any local county prosecutor from enforcing the archaic 1931 law that criminalizes abortion.”

Kitaba says the ACLU suit differs from Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s lawsuit, which is directed at local prosecutors with abortion providers in their counties. Both are in response to an anticipated U.S. Supreme Court ruling that may overturn Roe v. Wade.
