State Senator Aric Nesbitt is slamming Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s comments on the tax cut package approved by the Michigan Senate and House. Whitmer this week indicated she will veto the plan that would cut the income and business tax from 4.25% to 3.9%. It would also create a $500 per child tax credit and raise the exemption limit on pension taxes. The governor says the package of tax cuts is unsustainable, fiscally irresponsible, and would lead to spending cuts. She has proposed more targeted tax breaks for retirees and lower-income workers as Michigan runs a multibillion-dollar surplus. Nesbitt issued a statement Friday, saying he has “serious concerns about a governor who prefers to use Michigan’s massive budget surplus to grow the size of our state government instead of returning money to taxpayers facing historical economic challenges.” He says Whitmer’s words are disappointing, as usual. Nesbitt proposed the tax package saying with the state facing a major surplus, it should give people a break, especially considering the inflation pressure they’re facing.
