The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will be present for the next meeting of the Palisades Community Advisory Panel, or PCAP, to talk about the decommissioning process for the plant in Covert. Market Van Buren Programs and Projects Manager Sarah Snoeyink tells WSJM News the PCAP has been established to answer public questions about the closure of the plant and its effects. The March 9 meeting comes as the plant’s May closure approaches.

“First we’ll be addressing previous public questions that we received at our last meeting,” Snoeyink said. “We’re going to also have an update related to the Palisades Economic Recovery Initiative, which is conducting a study to find out some direct numbers related to the impact of the closure. Lastly, kind of the headline for this meeting, will be the NRC.”

The NRC will take public questions at the meeting.

“To answer the question of what does it actually take to decommission a power plant? The NRC is the federal body that has exclusive jurisdiction over the decommissioning process.”

Snoeyink says the public can submit questions in advance by emailing palisades@marketvanburen.org with the subject “Public Comment.” You can attend the meeting March 9 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the South Haven Campus of Lake Michigan College. You can also watch on Zoom. You can find out more right here.
