A new interactive map is available to help Berrien County residents understand the availability of broadband internet in the area. Speaking to the Berrien County Board of Commissioners Thursday, Southwest Michigan Planning Commission Director John Egelhaaf said this comes out of a recent study. Not only can you see the status of broadband in an area, but you can find out more.

“This is a really important tool to let folks know that if they don’t currently have broadband, it’s possible that an internet service provider is coming soon to provide you that service,” Egelhaaf said.

Egelhaaf says the tool includes maps of what download speeds you can expect in different areas. Commissioner Teri Freehling said this will help.

“We can use this as a tool, particularly as we’re talking about the American Rescue Plan fund dollars and the allocation, this is really a great opportunity to say here is what your community looks like,” Freehling said.

You can find the tool here. It shows true high-speed internet is available in the more populated areas of Berrien County, pretty much all up the lakeshore and in inland towns. It also shows plenty of areas with little or no access.
