The Berrien County Road Department is caught up after a busy week. Interim Director Kevin Stack told WSJM News on Friday that Wednesday was a challenge as the plows would clear an area and then it would be covered with snow again before they could come back to it. They had to focus on key roads, with Napier Avenue and Sodus Parkway a challenge.

“There was a lot more traffic out there than we were anticipating during that storm, making it more difficult for those drivers to focus and concentrate on what they were trying to do and avoid vehicles,” Stack said.

Stack says the crews got to all of the rest of the roads Thursday.

“As the sun came out yesterday and today, that salt and sand mixture is starting to activate and break that ice and cold pack up. So, today the crews have been out again since about 7 a.m. They’ve been addressing all their routes, pushing things back and getting things scraped down to pavement.”

Stack says the county fortunately did not get hit with another round of snow on Thursday, which at one point was looking possible. He says the department has more than 40 plows, each with about a 30 mile area to cover. The road department does still need a few plow drivers, but Stack says they were well staffed when the storm hit.
