As southwest Michigan digs itself out of this week’s snowstorm, one thing it has going for it is there haven’t been many power outages. Indiana Michigan Power spokesperson Tracy Warner told WSJM News Thursday afternoon they had about 5,000 on Wednesday, most of which were fixed within two hours.

“We have restored all of them,” Warner said, “At this moment right now, we have only six customers out, and only two in Michigan.”

Warner says the storm didn’t bring a lot of ice, reducing the chances of power lines snapping. I&M asks drivers to be extra careful.

“It turns out that cars hitting poles are really a major source of outages at this time. For example, last night there was a car that hit a pole down in central Indiana, an that affected 750 customers.”

Warner says I&M crews worked through Wednesday night into Thursday morning to restore power. He reminds everyone to stay away from any downed power lines they might see and to report them right away. He notes with a lot of tree branches sagging under snow, they can still break if you walk under them. If you do have an outage, he reminds those with generators to keep the machine outside, not in the garage, and well away from any windows or doors.
