1524 London astrologers predicted the world would end on that day. 20,000 Londoners fled their homes in anticipation of the event. It didn’t happen.
So they recalculated the date to 100 years later, February 1, 1624. It didn’t happen there either.

1842 The first adhesive postage stamps were issued by a private New York City carrier for prepayment of postage. The Post Office Department later adopted this method.

1898 The first car insurance was sold, by the Traveler’s Insurance Co. of New York.
