State Senator Kim LaSata is seeking re-election. She has announced she’ll run for Michigan Senate in the new District 17, recently created by the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission. That district covers the southern half of Berrien County and extends east to Cass, St. Joseph, and Branch counties, and also includes parts of Hillsdale County, Jackson County, and Calhoun County. LaSata says, “Michigan’s southern border region is my home. I have worked in Lansing to represent the people of this region,” adding the region’s “biggest competition is just over the border in Indiana and Ohio.” LaSata does not currently live in the 17th District, and is presumably moving to it. Running for the 17th means she won’t have to run against state Senator Aric Nesbitt, who she calls a friend. Her campaign says she currently represents a majority of the new 17th Senate District. She’ll continue to represent the current 21st district through the remainder of the current term.
