The Special Olympics of Michigan will benefit from a Polar Plunge planned by the Michigan State Police post in Niles next month. Troopers will take to frigid water at Watermark Brewing in Stevensville on February 5. Heather Fox with the Special Olympics tells WSJM News the law enforcement Polar Plunge events and the law enforcement torch runs each year provide big support to the organization.

“The Polar Plunge series is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” Fox said. “In a non-COVID year, we were raising upwards of $1.4 million just on Polar Plunges. Last year was a bit different. We took them virtual. We got creative and people were doing snow angels in their back yard, but we’re bringing back this year, so they will be in person.”

Fox says they’re hoping to be able to get their athletes back on the field this year, and the Polar Plunge events will help make it possible. Already, donations of more than $6,300 have been made to the event planned in Stevensville. You can donate online.
