South Haven Area Emergency Services says it has been experiencing an unprecedented call volume for the past few days. SHAES has responded to 41 calls in two days, many of them wind-related. On Monday, SHAES responded to the South Beach on a report of someone who might have been washed off the pier. A woman at the beach called 911 when she noticed a man walking out on the south pier, but didn’t see him return. SHAES responders donned their cold water suits to conduct a visual and sonar search of the channel and along the pier. However, a review of surveillance footage showed the man did, in fact, return to shore from the pier. SHAES notes the red flags would have been flying along the shore Monday if it had been the summer due to high waves. The agency also notes local hospitals are having capacity issues, and those who get taken off in an ambulance may be sent out of the area.
