Congressman Fred Upton and 75 Republican colleagues have sent a letter to several Biden administration officials seeking more information about reported plans to consider paying $450,000 per person to families who illegally crossed the southern border in 2018. Upton tells WSJM News The Wall Street Journal reported on the issue last week.

“Last week a story emerged that the Biden administration is seeking a court judgement that would authorize the payment of up to $450,000 per person for those that have crossed the border illegally and were separated from their families, with a cap at $1 million per family,” Upton said. “This is really outrageous.”

Upton says that would amount to millions of dollars not authorized by Congress. The letter to the Attorney General and the secretaries of Homeland Security and Health and Human Services says the government should “not be creating a policy that encourages individuals to illegally enter our country by traveling thousands of miles through some of the most dangerous parts of the world.” Upton says he and colleagues will try to stop the potential payments.
