The city of South Haven is moving forward on the apartments and homes to be built on the former Overton factory. The city council voted unanimously to approve a purchase and development with Habitat Company for the property and a pilot ordinance and municipal services contract for the first rental building. This resident doesn’t like the plan.

“The density of that property is almost 300 people. What’s the population of South Haven? 39-hundred. Do the math. It’s about 8%. We’re putting 8% of our population in a property less than six acres. The density doesn’t make any sense.”

Shortly after he spoke, another man spoke in favor of higher density housing.

“It makes more efficient use of a variety of things, including public transit, trash collection, far less water and sewer pipes are needed. Fewer electrical lines. Fewer sidewalks per person.”

The development still needs more approvals before anything can begin. The idea is to create housing that is more affordable in South Haven and keep the prices from skyrocketing with the market.
