Paul Layendecker’s “WAY BACK WHEN” for Monday, Oct. 4, 2021

1927  The carving on the Mount Rushmore memorial began. The memorial was completed in 1941. The sculpture features 60-foot tall heads of U.S. Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln and were chosen to represent the nation’s birth, growth, development, and preservation, respectively.

1957 The beginning of the space age as Soviets launched the first man-made satellite, Sputnik 1. It was about the size of a beach ball and took about 98 minutes to orbit the Earth on its elliptical path.

1976 Barbara Walters anchored her first ABC Evening News. She was given a 5-year contract at $1,000,000 a year.


Music History:

1970 Singer Janis Joplin died at the age of 27 of a heroin overdose. She had just finished recording her only #1 hit, Me and Bobby McGee three days earlier.
