1961 The Interstate Commerce Commission orders the end to segregation on interstate buses. This was largely due to the efforts of the Freedom Riders, who challenged bus segregation by riding as racially-mixed groups.
1964 The hit play “Fiddler on the Roof” opened on Broadway. It became the first Broadway musical to run for more than 3,000 performances and went on to win nine Tony awards. It Starred Bert Convy and Bea Arthur, who later starred in TV’s Maude and Golden Girls. V’s Maude and Golden Girls.
1976 The crime drama Charlie’s Angels debuted on ABC, about a trio of female private investigators who take assignments from their unseen boss Charlie. Criticized as “Jiggle TV” by critics, it was hugely popular with fans.
Music History:
1985 The first Farm Aid benefit concert was held before a crowd of 80,000 people at the Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois. Organized by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young. The event had been spurred on by Bob Dylan’s comments at Live Aid earlier in that year that he hoped some of the money would help American farmers. The star studded line-up included artists from Country, Rock and Top 40.
