State Senator Kim LaSata has taken a tour of some of the damage done by recent storms in St. Joseph County after the governor this week granted her request for a emergency declaration in the area. LaSata’s office has released the following:

State Sen. Kim LaSata on Thursday joined local leaders and emergency management officials on a tour of St. Joseph County as they continued their work to determine the scope of the damage and where resources can be used most efficiently.

“I was on my way home when the storms began to hit the area, and I knew the outcome was going to be bad,” said LaSata, R-Coloma.

The senator drafted a request for Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to declare a state of emergency for the area. The governor has since granted that request, making additional financial resources available from the state to help area families recover.

“Many people are still working to clean up their homes and properties — and several, unfortunately, still have a ways to go,” LaSata said. “I want to thank Sherman Township Supervisor Steve Wolf and Erin Goff, emergency management/homeland security director for the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department, for hosting the tour, as well as the homeowners who welcomed us and were patient as officials worked to surveil the damage.”
