Congressman Fred Upton is remembering former Congressman Paul Mitchell, who died over the weekend at the age of 64. Upton tells WSJM News he knew Mitchell well, taking many flights with him to Washington from Detroit. The two also flew down to Texas together to get a handle on the border crisis.

“He was a trooper to the end,” Upton said. “I talked to him about two weeks ago. He was a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus. He had some a real interest in the infrastructure bill we were doing and had some ideas, particularly in the auto sector and a number of different issues that he really cared about. He never threw in the towel, he never did.”

Mitchell was diagnosed with stage four renal cancer in June. Mitchell was from Macomb County in southeast Michigan, and represented suburban Detroit up into the Thumb region. He was a businessman who was first elected to Congress in 2016, not seeking reelection in 2020.
