Governor Gretchen Whitmer is seeking to use $75 million in federal COVID-19 money to fight violent crimes in the state. Speaking this week, she noted violence has gone up during the pandemic

“By hiring more police officers and keeping them in the communities they serve, we can foster trust and keep families safe,” Whitmer said.

Whitmer said the money would be used to help expand scholarships and financial incentives like loan repayment to people who serve their communities. She is also calling to use some of the money to remove guns from the streets.
