Sheriff’s Department To Seek New Command Center Vehicle

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is looking to purchase a new command center vehicle. Seeing as how that’s a pretty big purchase, Berrien County Commissioners were given notice that it’s coming on Thursday. During their regular meeting, County Administrator Brian Dissette said the purchase would probably come next year.

“It’s likely to be a custom piece of equipment, so even if there was a desire to go get it today, you’d still have months between the bidding process and the assembly process. It’ll be one of the sheriff’s budget requests,” Dissette said.

The sheriff’s department’s current command center vehicle isn’t so useful these days.

“This was used by the health department as a warming station for their vaccine clinic. There was discussion between the sheriff’s office and the health department about moving it down to Niles for a vaccine clinic. The decision was made not to do that because we weren’t confident that it could safely travel that distance.”

The sheriff’s department has the current mobile command center parked at its property at Church and Ship Street. The price of a new vehicle wasn’t discussed, but the sheriff’s department is planning a formal presentation on it for the board in the coming months.
