The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is cautioning residents about mosquito spraying scams. Just as we’ve seen home repair scams and scams following flooding, MDARD spokesperson Jennifer Holton tells WSJM News now is about the time fraudulent mosquito spraying operations would get active.

“We’re seeing more and more people looking for ways to control mosquitoes in their backyards or communities, and unfortunately with this, sometimes businesses are not always following the right rules or are certified applicators for that matter,” Holton said.

Holton says if you want to hire a company to spray for mosquitoes, identify a legitimate one and contact them.

“Consumers should be doing their homework before they choose a mosquito control service, especially if those services are being advertised on social platforms.”

You can find a list of companies approved by the state for pest control at the MDARD website. Holton also says you can help reduce mosquitoes yourself by removing standing water from your property.
