Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has announced some new changes in branch offices intended to eliminate a backlog of appointments that built up during the pandemic. Benson said Wednesday her office is hiring additional staff and implementing longer hours at branch offices. They will now be open through 6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, while they will open at 8 a.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

“This will expedite the process of working through the renewal backlog by providing in-person services to an additional 120,0000 Michigan residents between now and the end of the fiscal year,” Benson said.

That’s an extra hour of being open per day. Benson also said drivers license renewals will now be easier as drivers will only need to get a new picture taken once every 12 years. It was previously once every eight years.
