Governor Gretchen Whitmer is pushing state lawmakers to expand the Futures for Frontliners free tuition program with the help of federal COVID-19 funds. The governor said she wants to spend $100 million for the program.

“This infusion of resources would fully fund two years of college for the over 15,000 recipients who are already in taking taking classes, and it would also allow us to expand the program to cover those who were unemployed because of the COVID search this winter,” Whitmer said.

The governor also encouraged lawmakers to approve hero pay for workers who went to work each day during the pandemic. She said the expansion could mean more than 20,000 additional workers would be eligible to apply for the tuition program.
