Legislation from state Representative Mary Whiteford that expands the scope of practice for certified registered nurse anesthetists to allow them to practice to the full extent of their training has been approved by the Michigan Senate. Whiteford says there’s no reason why the highly trained professionals shouldn’t be allowed to expand their practice.
“They have a lot of training,” Whiteford said. “They have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, they have a minimum two years of ICU experience with ventilators, and then a four-year doctorate program that’s very intensive in their training. So they’re going to work within the scope of their practice to provide the best care possible, and it really fills a gap.”
Whiteford says this will fill a gap in the healthcare system. The plan returns to the House for concurrence before going to the governor.
