Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel says her department’s new transgender policy will help ensure all Michigan residents are treated with proper respect. She announced the department-wide policy last week and talked about it in a YouTube video.

“This policy addresses the needs of transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming employees at the Michigan Department of Attorney General,” Nessel said. “It also strengthens the expectation that employees will not just treat colleagues with dignity and respect, but every single person they come into contact with as a representative of my department.”

Nessel says the policy is intended to address the needs of transgender, intersex, and gender non-conforming employees of the AG’s department by clarifying how the law should be implemented in situations where questions may arise about how to protect the legal rights or safety of all employees.

“For instance, using the proper pronouns of someone involved in a court proceeding, or supporting a colleague who has confided in them of their decision to transition.”

Nessel says the policy must be followed by all department employees. She hopes other state agencies will follow suit. The full policy can be found on the AG’s website.
