1937 The Golden Gate Bridge connecting San Francisco to the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula opened. Many experts believed that a bridge could not be built across the 6,700 ft. strait, because of tides, heavy currents, high winds, and blinding fog. Just for point of reference, the Mackinac Bridge is over 26 thousand feet long.
1949 The then 22-year-old struggling actress Marilyn Monroe posed nude for her famous Playboy calendar photographs. She was paid $50 for the photo shoot. The photos appeared in the magazine in 1953.
1977 Janet Guthrie was the first woman to race in the Indianapolis 500. She finished 29th of 33.
Music History:
1957 Buddy Holly and the Crickets released ‘That’ll Be The Day.’ which became a #3 hit in the US. The song had its genesis in a trip to the movies by Holly. The John Wayne film The Searchers was playing. Wayne’s frequently-used, world-weary catchphrase, “that’ll be the day” was the Inspiration behind the song.
