The Michigan Liquor Control Commission has approved the city of St. Joseph’s request to establish a social district downtown. The social district will enable people to buy alcoholic drinks from participating businesses and then carry them around in designated areas. The idea is to have more foot traffic circulating to help restaurants and stores recover from the pandemic. St. Joe City Manager John Hodgson says the state approved the plan Friday. Now, each business that wants to participate can request specific permits from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission with support from the city commission. The commission has scheduled a special meeting for this Thursday to make recommendations for the interested businesses. The social district will cover the downtown area.
