Two people are facing charges after a high-speed chase with police in Berrien County on Wednesday morning. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says it started shortly after 2:50 a.m. near Pucker and Pokagon Streets in Berrien Township. Sheriff’s deputies spotted a black Dodge Ram pick-up that matched the description of a vehicle that had earlier fled police in Bridgman and Niles, where officers were investigating thefts from vehicles. When sheriff’s deputies tried to pull over the pick-up, it took off and started a chase that went through Berrien, Niles, Buchanan, Lake, Chikaming, and finally, Weesaw townships. The chase at times was faster than 100 miles per hour and lasted about an hour. Police say the driver of the pick-up tried to hit an officer with the Bridgman Police Department as he deployed stop sticks at the intersection of Cleveland and Brownstown. The officer jumped over the guardrail and wasn’t hit. The pick-up was ditched in a field off Minich Road, and not long after, 22-year-old Zachary Dawson Thain of Weesaw Township and a 16-year-old female passenger were taken into custody. Thain is facing a variety of charges. The 16-year-old was taken to the Berrien County Juvenile Center.
