The 39 election bills put forth by Republicans in the Michigan Senate are being blasted by Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and other officials. Benson says the bills don’t help local clerks, her elections officials, or voters.

“Michigan legislators are participating in a national, coordinated, and highly partisan attempt to change the rules of democracy and make it harder for people to vote because they are unhappy with the results of last year’s election,” says Benson.

Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum says the bills enact new ways to keep people from voting.

“The legislation will actively suppress voters and make it more difficult for Michigan’s residents to exercise their right to vote,” says Byrum.

Republicans defend the bills by saying they will make it harder to cheat.
