Benton Harbor City Commissioners have approved some minor changes for a couple of streets as part of ongoing planning. During a Monday meeting, the city commission approved a request to the Michigan Department of Transportation that East May Street from Colfax to Milton and Emery Avenue from Jennings to Union be reclassified as major streets. City Manager Ellis Mitchell explained.

“What that means to the city is that these two streets are major thoroughfares, and if we add them to the major streets, it brings more money in to take care of those streets,” Mitchell said.

Currently, those two stretches of street are classified as local streets. The request for a reclassification was based on a determination the two streets meet the mileage requirements to be considered major.
