The city of Benton Harbor is receiving $410,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds this year. During a Monday meeting of the Benton Harbor City Commission, Community and Economic Development Director Alex Little told commissioners he received that word from HUD this week.

“We have until August to submit our grant package,” Little said. “In the meantime, we have to conduct all the public hearings.”

Meanwhile, Little has said the city must spend more than $700,000 in CDBG funds from previous years by early May or face giving it back. The city commission last month approved a plan to organize the office that manages CDBG money to address deficiencies identified by HUD. Little said programs that could be covered by CDBG include water main work and housing rehab projects.
