A Buchanan woman has been rescued after she was trapped in her overturned car that had crashed into the St. Joseph River in Buchanan Township on Monday. Michigan State Police from the Niles post say troopers and the Buchanan Police and Fire Departments were called to the scene off East River Road around 10 a.m. They learned the 25-year-old driver swerved to avoid a deer in the road and lost control of her vehicle. The vehicle then struck a utility pole and two trees before going off a ledge, overturning, and landing in the St. Joseph River. Responders used the Jaws of Life to free the driver due to the roof of the vehicle being partially crushed. She was taken to a hospital in Niles for non-life-threatening injuries, and there was no one else in the vehicle. Police remind drivers not to swerve when they see a deer in the road, but to instead slow down as quickly as possible.
