If you think there has been a lot of road work this past year across Michigan, the head of MDOT says wait until the new year, and the year after that. MDOT Director Paul Ajegba says that $3.5 billion roadwork bond engineered by the governor will bring even more projects in 2021 and 2022. But he also warns the bond is not a permanent solution to what seems like a permanent problem in Lansing.

“Before we get to the end of that five years, the Legislature would walk with the governor to pass some kind of a funding package,” he says. “This is a financing tool, but bonding is not a permanent solution to a funding problem.”

Ajegba says the bond was timely, seeing how the pandemic reduced the number of cars on the road, and with it, gas tax revenue that funds MDOT projects.
