State Senator Kim LaSata has been named the Michigan Senate’s assistant majority floor leader. LaSata’s office has released the following:

State Sen. Kim LaSata announced Friday that she has been chosen by her peers to serve the Republican majority caucus as assistant majority floor leader for the 101st Legislature.

“I am humbled that my colleagues have entrusted me with serving our caucus as the next assistant majority floor leader,” said LaSata, R-Bainbridge Township. “This has been a difficult year for all of us, but I am excited to see what we can achieve together in the new year. Michigan families and small businesses have faced many challenges, through no fault of their own, and they deserve a state government that not only listens to them but does more to support them rather than punish them. I am honored and grateful to be a part of a team that is laser focused on accomplishing that.”

The assistant majority floor leader’s duties traditionally include assisting the majority floor leader in directing activities on the Senate floor.

LaSata was elected in November 2018 to represent the people of the 21st Senate District. In addition to serving as the assistant majority floor leader, she chairs the Appropriations Subcommittee on Universities and Community Colleges and serves on several policy committees.

Prior to her election to the state Senate, LaSata served one term in the state House of Representatives from 2017-2018. Before serving in the Legislature, LaSata was a school teacher in the Lake Michigan Catholic School system.

LaSata assumes her new role on Jan. 1.

Senate Republicans have held the majority for 36 years.
