Berrien County saw a slight dip in reported COVID cases in the week after Thanksgiving, but that could be because some testing sites closed down for the holiday. Speaking Friday, Berrien County Health Officer Nicki Britten said it will still be a few days before we learn how much of a jump in COVID the area will see due to Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, the CDC has updated its quarantine rules for those who may have been exposed.

“There is an option for shortening quarantine to 10 days with a very minimal risk of somebody within those last four days of quarantine,” Britten said.

The quarantine period was 14 days before. How about those who have already had COVID-19?

“The clearest guidance we have right now is that is somebody has had a confirmed case of COVID, for 90 days beyond that, they are considered to have a level of immunity. So if they are exposed to another person with COVID during that 90 period, they do not have to quarantine again.”

Britten said another positive test during that 90 days after an infection could be residual from when the patient had COVID the first time. She also noted Friday even with a vaccine coming, people will still need to mask up and distance for months to come.
