As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is reminding everyone of a mental health helpline. Spokesperson Bob Wheaton tells WSJM News the Stay Well line launched in May. Calling 888-535-6136 and selecting the number 8 will connect you with a trained counselor.

“They’re trained how to really listen to people and not judge them, just help the people who are calling develop coping strategies and review their options,” Wheaton said.

Wheaton says a recent online survey of 99,000 households conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau found more than one-third of American adults have symptoms of depressive and-or anxiety disorder. That’s triple the rate reported in 2019. The state is launching a new campaign called Be Kind to Your Mind to promote the Stay Well line. You can find out more at Michigan.gov/StayWell.
