Spectrum Health this week issued a pledge to eliminate structural racism and promote social equity within its organization. Spectrum Health Lakeland Vice President of Health Equity Lynn Todman tells WSJM News this shows it’s serious about addressing racism and equity.
“When you make a statement like that, such a strong statement publicly, it’s a huge accountability tool.” Todman said. “So now, people are going to be asking, ‘Let’s see the goods. You’ve made this pledge. Let’s see what you actually do about it.’ Now that it’s out in the public domain, people can actually hold this document to us and hold us accountable to this document.”
Todman says for the past several months, Spectrum Health Lakeland has been putting the mechanisms in place to improve equity. That’s after the organization announced its commitment to doing so earlier this year.
