$12 million has been put up by Consumers Energy to help customers pay their energy bills during the pandemic. Consumers Energy spokesperson Brian Wheeler tells WSJM News they have a goal to assist 25,000 households and 1,000 small businesses with the money.
“We have been working as a company this year to really limit our expenses, to be careful with our spending,” Wheeler said. “We’ve reached a situation where we have $12 million that otherwise would go to shareholders, the folks who invest in our company. In this case, we’ve decided to give it right back to the customers and help them with their bills.”
The funding will go directly to customers in need and to Michigan nonprofit organizations. Wheeler says as the winter arrives, there will be additional heating help for people. He urges any customer who is struggling to contact the utility or call 211.
