
South Beach in South Haven will remain closed due to hazardous conditions in Lake Michigan. Emergency agencies are searching for an 18-year-old presumed drowned in Lake Michigan on Sunday. The South Haven Police Department has released the following statement:
The city of South Haven has closed South Beach through tomorrow and possibly beyond due to hazardous weather conditions. Waves are expected to be four to six feet tomorrow (Monday) and beach hazards are in effect. The South Beach has been barricaded and signs posted warning against trespassing. Violators will be prosecuted.
Today, SHAES and SHPD responded to calls for individuals needing rescue despite the red flags posted and severely dangerous weather and lake conditions. The Van Buren County Dive Team and U.S. Coast Guard assisted.
Rescue efforts to locate an 18-year-old male presumed drowned will resume tomorrow or when conditions are safe to allow.
Family of the victim have been notified. No other information is being released at this time.
